Medical Science Books .com Medical Book Review:

Fundamentals of Sleep Medicine, one of the newest additions to the sleep medicine literature, outlines the “need to know” information from this maturing field of clinical medicine in a format suitable for the novice reader.  Much of the literature in this area is geared toward those with familiarity in EEG interpretation and technical aspects of respiratory and neurophysiology.  Unfortunately, this makes the primary care physician, who is likely to see increasingly significant numbers of patients with disordered sleep, less likely to delve further into the advances in this important area.  The need for this type of book which both educates on the basic facts of the field while relaying the most up to date guidelines from the American Academy of Sleep Medicine (AASM) is well overdue.

The reader is given a comprehensive survey of each aspect of sleep medicine in a volume which is relatively approachable in length.  Many motivated non-specialists may wish to read the entire book cover to cover, while others could profitably choose among the chapters on disorders for a brief synopsis of their condition of interest.  Regardless of which group a particular reader falls within, to get the most benefit from the book, it would be recommended to read the first 9 chapters (140 pages) which contain information with which the non-specialist would be least knowledgeable about.  These chapters include high yield descriptions of the monitoring systems and other special technologies which are essential to the ability to integrate results with clinical conditions of the patients.  This group of chapters also includes an appropriately detailed chapter on our current understanding of the neurobiology of sleep with the most important neurotransmitters and neuroanatomical structures highlighted.  Additional online content also exists with a short library of video examples of patients displaying several different types of disorders.

The level of writing is most suitable to a resident or attending physician.  The tabular organization of diagnostic guidelines is a useful feature which pulls out many of the most practical points from the AASM manual.  Figures and illustrations are plentiful in the crucial points of EEG analysis and cardiac monitoring and support the text well.    Overall, this is a highly informative book which introduces a complex subject to a broad audience of medical professionals.  For all those health professionals interested in sleep medicine, this is an excellent primer.  It may also serve those intending to take the sleep medicine specialty board examination as a source of rapid review of the main points tested.
